Standing Up for Change
On his journey to Eagle Scout, Zach learned that if there was something that needed to be changed, he had a responsibility to do something about it. After his now-famous speech to the Iowa Legislature about growing up with lesbian parents in Iowa, he co-founded Scouts for Equality to end the Boy Scouts of America's decades-old ban on LGBT people. As the founding executive director, Zach supported those who had been forced out of the BSA, built a winning organization, and executed the strategy that won an end to the BSA's discriminatory ban. Today, he hopes to continue his advocacy as a public servant in the Iowa state senate. He will fight for healthcare, education, and workers' rights.
